Mitsui DM Group Human Rights Policy

1. Our Basic Approach

With the corporate mission, “We work closely and flexibly with you, as your lifetime partner, to help you enjoy sweeter living,” the Mitsui DM Group aims to be the Group that always gives thanks to nature as the source of our business and delivers nature’s blessings widely to people in various forms through its business activities. To act in line with our Action Guidelines of “bringing happiness to people and society”, we recognize that respect for human rights is an essential element of business activities across our value chaini. Based on this recognition, we strive to avoid violating human rights, potentially and actually, of those affected by our business activities. If adverse impacts on human rights occur, we will take appropriate measures to correct them. We also work to promote respect for human rights across our value chain.

We respect the human rights norms set forth in the International Bill of Human Rights and the International Labour Organization’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work. We also support the United Nations (UN) Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact, and we conduct our business activities based on the respect of these principles. In addition, we comply with the laws and regulations in each country and region where we operate, and if there is a conflict between internationally recognized human rights and the laws and regulations of a country or region where we are operating, we seek ways to respect the principles of internationally recognized human rights wherever possible.

2. Scope of the Policy

This policy applies to all officers and employees of the Mitsui DM Group, including part-time workers, contract workers, and temporary workers. We also request that our business partners in the Mitsui DM Group’s value chain respect human rights in line with this policy.

3. Human Rights Issues Related to Business Activities

Based on the results of a human rights impact assessment conducted by external experts for the Mitsui DM Group, we have identified the most salient human rights issues within our value chain.

  • Prohibition of Discrimination

    We prohibit discrimination on any grounds, including, but not limited to, race, nationality, ethnicity, faith, language, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, physical or mental disability, and employment status.

  • Elimination of Forced Labor and Child Labor

    We are committed to eliminating forced labor and child labor. We specify terms and conditions of a worker’s employment and working environments in advance in a manner that is understandable to all officers, employees, and business partnersii working within the Mitsui DM Group.

  • Freedom of Association and the Right to Collective Bargaining

    We respect the freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining.

  • Management of Working Conditions

    We provide appropriate wages and benefits in compliance with national or regional laws and regulations and manage working hours appropriately to prevent excessive labor.

  • Prohibition of Harassment

    We do not engage in physical punishment, verbal, physical, psychological, sexual, or any other form of abuse or harassment.

  • Promotion of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

    We promote DEI by respecting the individuality, values, and diversity of each person and cooperating with one another to enable each person to reach their full potential.

  • Occupational Safety and Health

    We provide a pleasant and comfortable workplace environment that takes the health, safety, and well-being of people into account.

  • Impact on Customers

    Recognizing the impact that Mitsui DM Group products have on customer health, we provide safe and secure products and services to our customers and share information to support healthy lifestyles. We also practice responsible marketing to avoid providing information that could mislead customers or promote discrimination.

  • Impact on Local Communities

    We respect the land rights and access to water (right to equitable access to safe and clean water) of local communities and Indigenous Peoples in connection with the Mitsui DM Group’s business activities.

4. Human Rights Due Diligence

We conduct ongoing human rights due diligence to identify, assess, prevent, and mitigate adverse human rights impacts associated with our business activities.

5. Grievance Mechanisms and Access to Remedy

We take all stakeholder grievances seriously and provide for appropriate remediation. We have established a helpline as part of our internal reporting system where officers and employees can request a consultation or report matters related to human rights. We continue to strive to improve the structure and effectiveness of our grievance mechanisms and access to remedy.

6. Information Disclosure

We disclose our efforts to respect human rights on our website and through other appropriate communication channels.

7. Dialogue and Consultation with Stakeholders

In implementing this policy, we will seek advice from independent outside experts and engage in sincere dialogue and consultation with various stakeholders connected to our business activities.

8. Education and Training

We conduct necessary education and training for our officers and employees to ensure that they understand this policy and act in accordance with it in their individual duties.

  • iiBusiness Partner: An entity with which the organization has a business relationship to achieve its business objectives. (Examples) Affiliates, corporate customers, clients, suppliers, franchisees, joint venture partners, investee companies in which the organization holds equity, etc.
